The RBI's gold-loan restriction
RBI orders IIFL Finance to stop gold-loan sanctions
Under Section 45L(1)(b) of the RBI Act, the RBI directed IIFL Finance to cease and desist from sanctioning, disbursing, assigning, securitising or selling gold loans, while allowing servicing of the existing book. It cited material supervisory concerns from an inspection based on the position at 31 March 2023. (4 Mar 2024)
The concerns listed by the RBI
The RBI listed errors in assaying and certifying gold purity and weight at sanction and at auction, breaches of loan-to-value limits, cash disbursals and collections above the statutory limit, departures from the auction process and insufficient transparency in charges, and said that despite months of engagement no meaningful corrective action had been shown. (4 Mar 2024)
Company response: operational, not ethical
The company's chairman said the issues were operational, that there were no governance or ethical concerns, and that the action was a little harsh; the company said it was taking corrective steps. (5 Mar 2024)
Special audit
The RBI said it would institute a special audit and review the restrictions only after findings were rectified. News reports say the company's June 2024 presentation described the special audit as concluded with observations being implemented. (2024)
